Welcome to Kingdom Kids by me, Laura Davis.
What’s a Kingdom Kid? “Kingdom Kids” was the name of the children’s ministry in the Christian fundamentalist cult I was born and raised in. Kid’s who grew up in the church were often referred to as “Kingdom Kids”.
I still think of myself, and anyone who was born and raised in a coercive, high control group, as a Kingdom Kid, though I know plenty who hate the phrase (I get it). We really were kids of their Kingdom.
I was even named after a “World Sector Leader” (a title given to one of just eight people at the tippity top of the whole pyramid in my former church). As a child, I relished this as my legacy of sorts. Now at 32, knowing the overwhelming perversion and corruption of the group I was born into, it’s a legacy I want to ruin, or maybe a better word is abandon. Truthfully, I feel called by God to do so.
I want to wreck this legacy by sharing my story and stories of other Kingdom Kids, stories of those from the International Churches of Christ and other cultic groups.
Here we are. Your “Kingdom Kids”. Grown up. Growing up. Unlearning all we were taught. We will be heard and our lives will bear witness not only to the harm we endured but also our audacious pursuit of recovery. Can I get an amen?
